Liverpool was named as a World Heritage Site
by UNESCO in July 2004. The city is rightly proud of its architectural
wealth and was nominated as 'The supreme example of a commercial port at the
time of Britain's greatest global influence.
The acknowledgement of Liverpool's
international significance pays tribute to the last three centuries when the
port was one of the busiest in Britain. Much of the World Heritage
Site is on or near the waterfront but, venture a bit further out and you'll
find even more to see.
Many of the buildings listed here are still
in use and, as such, generally have limited access although some have open
days during the year with guided tours. |
